Review the Help Centre 'Advice and Guidance on Using this Service' section for general guidance on features and functionality available for use on the Centre for Teaching Excellence Virtual Learning Environment.
I can't see any courses
Courses generally do not have enrolment keys configured, which means that you should be able to access all course resources. Navigate to the 'Course Catalogue' menu option and you will see all the courses available to you which you can self enrol onto.
How do I enrol on a course?
Courses with self‑enrolment enabled allow you to enrol yourself.
- Log in to the Centre for Teaching Excellence Moodle system.
- Find the course using the Search courses option or the Course Catalogue.
- Open the course page.
- Select Enrol me.
Where can I see all the courses I am enrolled on?
For a quick access / view of all the CfTE courses you have self enrolled onto as a participant:
- You can navigate to the 'Dashboard' page from the menu bar the listing of all courses you are enrolled onto will be displayed under the 'Course Overview' section of the page. You can 'star' courses by selecting the 3 vertical dots on a given course and selecting 'Start this Course'. You can then filter the 'Course Overview' block to only show your 'starred' courses.

I need to update my school, local authority, sector, position details, email etc where can I do this?
You can update certain information fields on your profile page. This can be accessed from the top right section of the page, your profile icon and select the 'profile' option. Under 'User Details' select 'Edit' and update the required fields.
Please note any attempts to update your email to an email domain which is not permitted on this service will be blocked / not permitted.
Can I unenrol from a course?
All courses allow learners to unenrol themselves.
- Open the course
- Go to Course settings
- Select Unenrol me from this course from the More dropdown
If this option is not available, please contact the course administrator.
Please Note: If you have contributed to a course, either via forum posts or contributions to other activities, there is a risk this work will be lost, so please be careful if choosing to use this option and contact the IT helpdesk for support if you are unsure.
I forgot my password - what should I do?
You can reset your password easily.
- Go to the Centre for Teaching Excellence Moodle login page.
- Select Lost password?
- Enter your username or email address.
- Follow the instructions sent to your email.
If you do not receive an email notification, please contact the IT Helpdesk for support.
Which browser should I use?
Moodle works best with modern, up‑to‑date browsers, such as:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari (on macOS and iOS)
Make sure your browser is updated to the latest version.
Why and how do I clear my browser cache?
Why should I clear my browser cache?
Your browser saves temporary files (the cache) to help pages load faster. Occasionally, these saved files become outdated and can cause problems in Moodle, such as:
- Pages not displaying correctly
- Buttons or activities not working
- Changes not appearing after an update
- Being logged out unexpectedly
Clearing your browser cache forces the browser to load the most up‑to‑date version of the site and often resolves these issues.

How do I change my notification preferences?
- Log in to the Centre for Teaching Excellence Moodle.
- Select your profile picture (top‑right).
- Select Preferences.
- Select Notification preferences. (shortcut: click on the bell icon 🔔 and then on the cog ⚙)
- Review the list of notification types and choose how you want to receive each one:
- Web: shown in Moodle
- Email: sent to your registered email address
- Changes are saved automatically.

Why is the Centre For Teaching Excellence Moodle site only partly translated?
The Centre for Teaching Excellence Moodle site is bilingual, and work is ongoing to translate the interface and content into Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig).
At present, not all areas of the site are fully translated, including some parts of core Moodle. You may therefore see a mix of languages in menus, buttons, system messages, or help text.
